Autobiography and Goals

'My biggest fear was that when you're writing about yourself, you're writing about yourself. It could come off like an ego trip!'

- Steve Martin

'The fear of self-promotion consists of all behavioral habits, thoughts, actions, or feelings, which conspire to keep competent people of all walks of life from being able to stand up and take credit for who they are and what they do well!"

- Behavioral scientist George W. Dudley, co-author of the book "Are You Earning What You Are Worth?"

While growing up my interests were strongly influenced by family members and friends, a number of whom were physicians, and who instilled in me a curiosity for biology and the life sciences. Through the guidance or life examples of these early mentors, I was inspired to view learning and research as my first goal in life. After finishing my public school education I went on to university and received a B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees, both in biology. Following the completion of my master’s degree, I developed an interest in sleep medicine, a choice which I attribute to my experience working in sleep laboratories and additionally to having the opportunity to carry out sleep-related research. I was also fortunate to have had gifted and inspiring teachers in graduate courses in sleep and chronobiology which I took at the University of Toronto and elsewhere. These experiences have molded me, and consequently, I look forward to continuing my career in sleep research.

Since the nineteen-nineties, there have been a number of academic and research opportunities which have helped me to further define my interests and research objectives. Sleep and Chronobiology were my areas of special interest during my master’s program at the University of Toronto. As a postgraduate research student I worked under the guidance of Colin M Shapiro, B.Sc., MBBCH., PhD., MRCPSYCH, FRCP(C)., of the University of Toronto’s Department of Psychiatry, who suggested that I work on clinical areas of sleep medicine in his sleep research laboratory at the Toronto Western Hospital. During that period, I worked in close collaboration with Leonid Kayumov, PhD, RPsgT, ABSM (Kayumov et al., 2000a, b). As a result of this experience, I learned the core skills of clinical sleep medicine, including how to deal with patients and research subjects, as well as the most technical requirements of scoring and analyzing polysomnographic recordings, diagnosis of sleep pathologies, and report writing. I really enjoyed my time working with Prof. Shapiro and his truly international research team.

During the same period, I also worked with Martin R. Ralph, Ph.D., at the University of Toronto’s Department of Psychology. Prof. Ralph exposed me to several areas of biological rhythms during my graduate program at the university’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Pandi-Perumal et al., 2002).

Later on, I joined with Mircea M. Steriade, MD, DSc, Director of the Laboratory of Neurophysiology, University of Laval School of Medicine, Quebec, and continued to work on the neurophysiological investigations on the behavioral state regulation in an animal model using cats. This experience gave me the opportunity to work on fundamental problems for understanding sleep at the molecular and cellular level. I have participated in the research on the role of Cortical Ih in the generation of paroxysmal activities and the role of higher propensity of association vs. primary visual cortices to the genesis of slow sleep oscillations (Pandi-Perumal et al., 1999; 2000).

More recently I worked with the preeminent scientists such as Michael H. Chase, PhD, Department of Physiology and Brain Research Institute (1999-2000), UCLA School of Medicine, and Rosalind D. Cartwright, PhD, of the Department of Psychology, RUSH University Medical Center, Chicago, USA. In my work with Prof. Chase, I carried out research on the intracellular study of excitability changes in hypoglossal motoneurons during naturally-occurring active sleep (Fung et al., 2001a,b). My experience with Prof. Cartwright involved participation in N.I.M.H. sponsored research on sleep in untreated depressed subjects (Cartwright et al., 2003).

Concurrent with my clinical and laboratory research activities I became a scientific editor with Landes Bioscience and Springer Verlag, USA (2003 to present), an experience which has served to broaden my understanding significantly about the strategy of reporting and presenting research.

During my five-year association with various publishers, I have had the opportunity to edit more than 200 scientific papers dealing with sleep medicine and chronobiology and have made many good friends among scientists around the world in the fields of sleep and biological rhythms research. I have also had the opportunity to review journal articles written by leading scientists as a regular or as an ad hoc reviewer for the journals.

Over the yeas, I have edited several volumes related to sleep and biological rhythms: This includes, Melatonin: Biological Basis of its Function in Health and Disease (Landes Bioscience, USA, 2005); Neuroendocrine Correlates of Sleep/wakefulness (Springer-Verlag, USA, 2005); Sleep and Sleep Disorders: a Neuropsychopharmacological approach (Landes Bioscience/Eurekha.com and Springer SBM, USA, 2006); Clinical Pharmacology of Sleep (Birkhauser-Verlag, Switzerland, 2006); Sleep disorders: their impact on public health (Informa Healthcare, UK, 2006 - British Medical Association 2007 Award Winner, highly commended - Category Neurology); Neuroimmunology of sleep (Springer-Verlag, USA, 2007); Neurochemistry of Sleep and Wakefulness (Cambridge University Press, England, 2007); Melatonin: from molecules to therapy (NovaScience Publishers, New York, USA, 2007); Primary Care Sleep Medicine: a practical guide (Current Clinical Practice; endorsed by American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) (Humana Press/Springer-Verlag, USA, 2007); Sleep and Psychosomatic Medicine (Informa Healthcare, UK, 2007); Serotonin and sleep: molecular, functional, and clinical aspects, functions, and regulation (Birkhauser-Verlag, Switzerland, 2007); Sleep and Quality of life in Clinical Medicine, (Humana/Springer, USA, 2008); Experimental Endocrinology and Reproductive Biology (Science Publishers, NH USA, 2007); Sleep Disorders: Diagnosis and Therapeutics (Informa Healthcare, UK, 2008); Principles and Practice of Geriatric Sleep Medicine (Cambridge University Press, UK, 2009); Seasonal Affective Disorder: Practice and Research - 2nd edition, 2009 (Oxford University Press, Oxford, UK), Sleep and Mental Illness (Cambridge University Press, 2009), Drugs, Driving and Traffic Safety (Birkhauser-Verlag, Switzerland), GABA and sleep: Molecular, Functional, and Clinical Aspects (Birkhauser-Verlag, Switzerland, 2010), Rapid Eye Movement Sleep: Regulation and Function (Cambridge University Press, England, 2011, Narcolepsy: a clinical guide (Humana Press/Springer, USA, 2010), Primary Care Sleep Medicine: a practical guide, 2nd edition (Humana Press/Springer, USA, 2014), Narcolepsy: a clinical guide, 2nd edition (Humana Press/Springer, USA, 2010), Sleep and Psychosomatic Medicine, 2nd edition (CRC Press/Informa Healthcare, USA), Orexin and Sleep: molecular, functional, and clinical aspects (Birkhauser-Verlag, Switzerland/Springer USA), Synopsis of Sleep Medicine (Apple Academic Press, Canada) and Dopamine and Sleep: molecular, functional, and clinical aspects (Birkhauser-Verlag, Switzerland/Springer USA); Melanin-concentrating hormone and sleep: molecular, functional, and clilnical aspects (Springer-Verlag, Switzerland); and Clinical Polysomnography (Apple Academic press, Canada). Editing a volume is not easy. In a job like this even when it is finished, there is always 'one more thing' to do!

Over the years of my decades-long academic career, I am now attempting to reach a wider audience with the publications of two of my children's books: The title of the books are, 'Alice is sleeping' will be published in English language (publisher to be decided) and the other, 'Alice and the Sleeping fairy' will be published in Japanese (publisher to be decided).

Book reviews for the above volumes have appeared in various international journals. This includes, but not limited to, NEJM, JAMA, American Journal of Psychiatry, Sleep, Sleep Medicine, Clinical Neuropsychiatry, Acta Neuropsychiatrica, Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental, Psychological Medicine, Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, European Journal of Neurology, Comprehensive therapy, Respiratory Care, Integrative and Comparative Biology, Mayo Clinical Proceedings, Traffic Injury Prevention, The ICADTS (The newsletter of the International Council on Alcohol, Drugs and Traffic Safety) Reporter, and other health-related journals that can be searched online.

Over the years, I have acquired and developed a basic understanding of key issues in the field of book publishing. As an editor, I was involved in the development of various high profile volumes in the areas of sleep medicine. I was exposed to various aspects of scientific editing and publishing in general. For example, I was responsible for various aspects of publishing of the volumes that I was involved with. I have contributed to the organization of the submission of incoming chapters, editorial review production process, and eventual publication of the volumes. I was able to able to liaise effectively with co-editors, contributors, department, and other administrative staff and supervise the work of subcontractors when needed. I have demonstrated skills and experience with the review process as an editor and/or as an author (or co-author) and was able to conduct the entire peer review process independently and without direct outside supervision. I have the necessary skills include professional and scholarly competence in all of these areas: (i) making sound scientific judgment, (ii) dedication to both current and emerging standards for ethical peer review, (iii) fluent communications skills, (iv) and an ability to work with specific deadlines.

In addition to being an editor of over 25 major academic titles and about 30 chapters; I have also been a listed author on over 200 scientific articles, almost all in the sleep medicine and chronobiology fields.

Over my decades-long academic career, I am now attempting to reach a wider reading audience. With the publication of my first children’s book, I am dedicated to increasing awareness of how sleep and health are closely related. This book is the result of that aspiration. This innovative story entitled, 'Alice is Sleeping' is best suited for children in the 4-8 age range. The goal of this picture book is to provide a look at how advocating a simple idea such as the pivotal need for adequate sleep in children can not only improve the medical and mental health of the child but likewise can lead to better adult (healthy sleep) habits. Such a positive lifestyle, in turn, can help to transform the health of the nation / world.

In summary, my interest in sleep research had its early roots in my interest in biology but became more focused as I acquired knowledge in classical biology through five years of degree programs and, further, as I gained experience with the actual process of doing research. In particular, the opportunities I have had to work under some exceptionally accomplished mentors in the sleep medicine field contributed greatly to my development. Taken together I believe that my overall background will enable me to make a significant contribution to the scientific field.
